EXPLOSIVE INCREASE IN UNEMPLOYMENT

Seasonally adjusted labor market data shows that in the period of December 2018, non-agricultural unemployment rate increased by 0.7 percentage points and reached 14.9 percent. In this period, employment decreased in manufacturing and construction. On the other hand, employment increases in services slowed down. Although the non-agricultural labor force decreased in this period, we witnessed a strong unemployment increase and total number of unemployed exceeded 4 million. Year on year non-agricultural employment decrease attained 276 thousand. Similar increases in unemployment rates over the course of the last two period (more than 1 percentage points) were observed in 2008-2009 Global Recession and in the period of July 15.
