According to the labor market statistics released by TurkStat on the 17th of January, non-agricultural employment has increased by 600 thousand and non-agricultural labor force by 171 thousand in the period of October 2010 (September-October-November). The rise in non-agricultural labor force remained below of its long run trend of 550 thousand. Given that the labor force has been increasing above its trend during the crisis, it is not surprising to observe a slower increase during the recovery. This limited increase prevents an increase in unemployment. Non-agricultural employment reached 17 million 67 thousand level corresponding to a 3.6 percent increase since October 2009.

The decrease in non-agricultural employment coupled with a minor increase in the non-agricultural labor force resulted in a 479 thousand decrease in non-agricultural unemployment (Figure 1). Hence, non-agricultural unemployment rate decreased to 14.1 percent in October 2010 from 16.4 percent in October 2009. Despite this drastic decrease, non-agricultural unemployment rate is still above its level prior to the crisis (12.9 percent).
