Canan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The contested nature of Islam and democracy in Europe among the public and political\u00a0circles inextricably relates to the EU membership of Turkey \u2013 predominantly Muslim\u00a0but a secular state founded on democratic values and principles. This paper examines\u00a0the debate over Turkey and its accession to the EU within the context of religion,\u00a0democracy and the question of the compatibility of these two from mass and political\u00a0elite opinion level in Italy. The debate over Turkish accession to the EU not only does\u00a0the preferences of the decision making elite but also opinions of their electorates \u2013 mass\u00a0public \u2013 play an indispensable role. This paper surges into public and political elite\u00a0perspectives on Islam along the lines with whether it is considered compatible with\u00a0democratic values. This paper questions Islam, democracy, Turkey and EU also with\u00a0reference to the degree which religious fundamentalism is a threat to Italian elite and\u00a0public, and on what grounds judgments on Turkey\u2019s EU membership are articulated.\u00a0The core questions addressed in the paper read: \u201cHow do European publics and political\u00a0elite view whether Muslim Turkey is compatible with membership of the EU and its\u00a0\u2018democracy\u2019?\u201d and \u201cWhat implications shall we draw out of this analysis for the state of\u00a0Islam and democratic compatibility?\u201d It provides an empirical investigation into\u00a0temporal (2004 through 2006) changes and the public-elite cleavage in Italy presenting\u00a0a quantitative discussion of the data from the Italian Elite Survey (IES) (2004),\u00a0European Elite Survey (EES) (2006) and Transatlantic Trends Surveys (TTS) (2004 and\u00a02006). In conclusion, this paper generates implications for Italians attitudes towards\u00a0Islam and Islam\u2019s compatibility with democracy in particular, and bridging the culturalreligious\u00a0divide\u00a0between\u00a0the \u2018other\u2019\u00a0Muslim\u00a0and Turk\u00a0in\u00a0Italy\u00a0and\u00a0Italians\u00a0approaches\u00a0to\u00a0cultural-religious\u00a0diversity\u00a0in\u00a0general.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>pdf.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/betam.bahcesehir.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/WorkingPaper0011.pdf\">WorkingPaper#001<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ebru \u015e\u0002.
